Hamerkop is the only living bird species in the genus Scopus and the family Scopidae. The name hamerkop comes from Afrikaans word for hammerhead.
They are mostly found in the wetlands areas such as lakesides, fishponds, and riverbanks and they feed on fish, insects, and amphibians.
Hamerkop is known for its huge domed nest, they build the biggest nests of any bird in Africa, and usually pair build a nest together while a finished nest can weigh over 50 pounds.
